Amicalola Falls State Park
Amicalola Falls State Park is rich in natural beauty as well as rich in history. "Amicalola", named by the Cherokee Indians that inhabited the area for many years, means "tumbling waters" and adequately describes the 729 feet of falls tumbling down seven different cascades. Even though the falls are considered one of the "seven natural wonders" of Georgia, the history behind the area is what put it on the map. In 1828, the area surrounding Amicalola Falls, Dawson County, experienced the first U.S. gold rush. By 1838, gold mining had reached such significant proportions that the government established a branch mint in the town of Dahlonega. It remained in operation from 1838 to 1861 when it was closed due to the Civil War. Today, the basement of the mint serves as the foundation for the administration building on the campus of North Georgia College. A complete collection of coins minted in Dahlonega may be seen in the college library. Gold also mined in the area has covered the dome of the State Capitol since 1958. Visit Amicalola Falls State Park and let the beauty and the history of the area awaken your spirits.
